Monterey is located 15 kilometres south of the Sydney central business district; it is in the local government area of Bayside Council and is part of the St George area.

Monterey was originally part of the suburbs of Ramsgate and Brighton-Le-Sands. As the area expanded street names with a Californian influence were introduced, street names such as Pasadena, Culver, Monterey and Hollywood. A small group of shops on Chuter Avenue near Monterey Street opened, and the post office was known as the Monterey Post Office.

When Rockdale council wanted to create a new suburb in 1972 the name Monterey was chosen. Some thought it was too American, but most people were in favour.

Monterey is on the western shores of Botany Bay. The suburb is mostly residential and is surrounded by the suburbs of Rockdale, Kogarah, Ramsgate, Botany Bay, Ramsgate Beach and Brighton-Le-Sands.
