Randwick is located 16 kilometres south east of the Sydney central business district; it is the administrative centre for the local government area of the City of Randwick. The postcode is 2031 and Randwick is part of the Eastern Suburbs region.

Randwick was named after a village in Gloucestershire England. Randwick was the birthplace of Simeon Henry Pearce who became the Mayor of Randwick six times. In 1842 Simeon and his brother James migrated to Australia and were responsible for the early development of Coogee and Randwick. Simeon lived in a house he named Blenheim; it is still standing on Blenheim Street.

In 1859 Randwick was declared a Municipality and became a city officially in 1990.

Prince of Wales hospital had been a dominant fixture in the area; it originally started out as a home for destitute children. It became a military hospital in 1915 and has continued to grow as a medical facility.
