Zetland Historical Note:
Zetland is located 4 kilometres south of the Sydney central business district; it is in the local government area of the City of Sydney.
Zetland is a predominantly an industrial suburb with some medium to high density housing. It is also a part of *Green Square* a project of urban renewal that is constructing modern business, residential and retail developments.
Zetland has been named after Thomas Dundas the second Earl of Zetland, who was a friend of Governor Sir Hercules Robinson. Zetland is an archaic spelling of Shetland.
In the early 1900’s there was a lagoon and swamp in Zetland that was drained to create Victoria Park racecourse. The privately owned racecourse was closed after World War two and the land bought by the British Motor Corporation for a car plant. Leyland Australia closed the plant in 1974 and the site was acquired by the Commonwealth of Australia for a Naval stores depot which closed in the mid 1990’s.
