Windsor is located 56 kilometres north west of the Sydney central business district; it is in the local government area of the City of Hawkesbury. Windsor is on the north western outskirts of Sydney and sits on the Hawkesbury River.

Windsor is the third oldest place of British settlement in Australia. A settlement was first started here in 1791 near the head of navigation on the Hawkesbury River. Settlers took advantage of the fertile river flat for agriculture. Originally named Green Hills it was later renamed Windsor after Windsor in England. In 1810 the town was officially proclaimed. Governor Lachlan Macquarie ordered the main *institutions of organised settlement* to be erected, such as a Church, Gaol, School and an inn.

The area was known as Sydney’s *Bread Basket* ensuring the survival of the starving colony. Windsor was accessible by coastal shipping to and from Sydney. In 1814 a road to Windsor had been built and by 1864 the train line.
