Villawood is located 25 kilometres west of the Sydney central business district; it is in the local government areas of both the City of Bankstown and the City of Fairfield. It is part of the Greater Western Sydney region.

Villawood is a residential suburb, best known for the Villawood Detention Centre that is located there.

The area was once home to the Gandangara Aboriginal people. In the 1840’s the area started being settled, during the 1860’s the area was used as pastoral land, but was overrun with wild and rabid dogs. Woodville Road which runs through Villawood was once named Dog Trap Road as many farmers were setting traps for the dogs.

In 1922 the train station opened and was known as Woodville Road. There was some confusion with another township in the Hunter Valley named Woodville, so the name was transposed into *Villawood*
