A geeky historical note on this suburb +

Willoughby is located 8 kilometres north of the Sydney central business district; it is in the local government area of the City of Willoughby. It is located in the lower north shore region.

The City of Willoughby takes its name from the suburb, but, its administrative centre is located in nearby Chatswood – which is also the areas local commercial centre.

There is some debate over how Willoughby got its name. Some believe it was named by Surveyor-General Sir Thomas Mitchell in honour of Sir James Willoughby Gordon, who he had served with during the Peninsular War. Others believe it was named after a parish in England.

In 1871 the post office was built as was a pommy lodge – a small sandstone building in Penshurst Street. It was originally a Congregational Church In 1884 Laurel Bank Cottage a single storey home was constructed. It is now owned and run as a function and conference centre by the local Masonic Lodge.
