Yagoona Historical Note:
Yagoona is located 20 kilometres south west of the Sydney central business district; it is in the local government area of the City of Bankstown, and is part of the south western Sydney region. Yagoona is an Aboriginal word that means *Today* or *Now*.
The area was once home to the Bediagal Aboriginal people and the area now known as Bass Hill, Yagoona and north Bankstown was once called Irish Town. There was a large concentration of Irish Rebels transported out in the late 1700’s from Ireland.
The suburb of Yagoona was created in 1927. St Matthew’s Anglican Church was built on Liverpool Road (now known as the Hume Highway) in 1861 to cater for the Protestants living in the district; it also doubled as a school.
In 1971 Yagoona was home to the first McDonalds restaurant in Australia, it closed in 1994. Yagoona is also home to the head office of the RSPCA which is located on Rookwood Road
