Waverly Historical Note:
Waverley is located 7 kilometres east of the Sydney central business district; it is in the local government area of Waverley Council. The council takes its name from the suburb, but, it’s administrative centre is located in Bondi Junction.
Waverley has been named after a home built in 1827 near Old South Head Road by Barney Levely. He named the house Waverley after the title of his favourite book – *Waverley* by Sir Walter Scott. Waverley Municipality was proclaimed in 1859, the house was such a distinctive landmark it gave its name to the surrounding suburb.
Waverley cemetery was established in 1877 and is one of Australia’s most notable cemeteries for its cliff side location.
In 1884 *Edina* a Victorian Mansion was built in Birrell Street.
Waverley is now home to QE Foodstores, Albion Cycles, Little Me Cafe, My Organic Box, Wholegreen Bakery, Waverley College, St Charles Catholic Primary School, St Clare’s College, Waverley Gymnastics Centre and many more businesses.
