Penrith is located 50 kilometres west of the Sydney central business district; it is the administrative centre for the local government area of the City of Penrith.

How Penrith got its name is unclear, it is believed it has been named after Penrith in Cumbria England. Another theory is that in the early day’s development in the area centred along one road. The similarity to an English Penrith was noticed and the name suggested. The earliest reference to the name was noted in 1819.

Penrith is located at the foot of the Blue Mountains. Part of the Great Dividing Range, it is to the east of the Nepean River.

Penrith today is one of the major commercial centres in Greater Western Sydney. There are a number of shopping complexes, the largest being Westfield Penrith, which had been known as Penrith Plaza. The centre features over 200 stores – from small specialty shops, and food outlets to department stores.
