Northmead Historical Note:

Northmead is located 26 kilometres west of the Sydney central business district; it is in the local government areas of both the City of Parramatta and the Hills Shire. Northmead is part of the greater Western Sydney region.

The Northmead area was once part of the British settlement at Parramatta and the domain of Government House. What is left of this domain now forms Parramatta Park. The suburbs name comes from the location of the north *mead* or meadow. Between 1859 and 1889 the land was subdivided up and the Northern Meadow and western Meadow were split off – called Northmead and Westmead.

Many orchards were established in the area.

Northmead is now a low to medium density suburb of townhouses, apartment buildings and free standing homes. There is a shopping centre on Windsor Road which features small speciality shops and an IGA Supermarket. There are two schools – Northmead Public School and Northmead High School
