Neutral Bay is located 5 kilometres north of the Sydney central business district; it is in the local government area of North Sydney Council. Neutral Bay is in the Lower North Shore area.

The name Neutral Bay goes back to the time of early settlement when different areas of Sydney Harbour were zoned for different incoming vessels – this bay was where foreign vessels would dock – hence the name Neutral. The bay was far enough away from Sydney Cove keeping probably enemy ships at a distance, and discouraging convicts to escape on these vessels.

The suburb takes its name from the bay. The aboriginal name for the area is “Wirra-birra”.

Surrounding suburbs include, Cremorne Point, Cremorne, North Sydney, Milsons Point, Crows Nest, Kirribilli and Cammeray.

The main shopping area in Neutral Bay is along Military Road and is called Neutral Bay Junction, featuring many cafes, shops, and restaurants. The Big Bear shopping centre has supermarkets and grocery stores.
