Narellan is located 60 kilometres from the Sydney central business district it is in the local government area of Camden Council and is part of the Macarthur region.

The Narellan area was once home to the Tharawal people who were based in the Illawarra area. It is believed that the Gandangara people, who were based in the Southern Highlands area, were also inhabitants of this area.

Relations with the local aboriginal population were good until the British settlers started clearing and fencing the land, this made it harder for the aboriginals to source food. Clashes between the two groups arose and in 1816 when a number of Tharawal people were killed the remainder retreated from conflict with the colonists.

Granted 5,000 acres in 1805 John Macarthur – wool pioneer settled at Cowpastures – now known as Camden. He cleared the land for farming and the land was used for this purpose for the next 200 years.
