Mount Annan Historical Note:
Mount Annan is located 60 kilometres south west of the Sydney Central business district; it is in the local government area of Camden Council and is part of the Macarthur region.
The area was originally the home land of the Tharawal people who were based in the Illawarra region. Early relationships between the Aboriginals and settlers were cordial, but as farmers started to clear their land, and fence off properties, which effected food resources in the area, the Aborigines retaliated. When a number of Aborigines had been massacred, they retreated having very little to do with the settlers.
Wool pioneer John Macarthur was granted 5,000 acres in 1805 at Cowpastures, now known as Camden; after the land was cleared he used it for sheep farming. For the next 200 years the land remained farming land until the growing Sydney population saw the need for housing.
