Mosman is located 8 kilometres north east of the Sydney central business district; it is the administrative centre for the local government area of the Municipality of Mosman. It is located on the lower north shore of the Sydney region.

Mosman has been named after Archibald Mosman and his twin brother George, who in 1831 moved onto a 4 acre land grant. They had founded a whaling station on a bay in the harbour and were also involved in shipping. George eventually became involved in grazing while his brother Archibald continued with his whaling activities and by 1838 owned 108 acres along the Mosman waterfront.

The area was the original home of the Borogegal tribe with Bungaree a well known Aboriginal who joined British explorers on their voyages. He later became leader of his tribe and was given land at Georges Head.

Mosman features a number of beaches including Chinamans, Cobblers, and Balmoral beach Taronga Zoo is located here.
