It is thought that area got its name from the lilies that grew in fields here, but its name origin is still not known. Originally farmland Lilyfield was a part of Leichardt.

The most prominent feature in the area is the former Callan Park hospital. Built on land belonging to the Callan estate, the psychiatric hospital was designed by James Barnet the government architect and based on an asylum in Kent, England.  Completed in 1884 it was known as the Callan Park Hospital for the Insane until 1914. The main part of the hospital was called the Kirkbride Complex after Dr Kirkbride an American psychiatrist.
