Holsworthy Historical Note:
Holsworthy is located 31 kilometres south west of the Sydney central business district. It is in the local government area of the City of Liverpool and is partly within the Sutherland Shire
Holsworthy was originally spelt as Holdsworthy until after World War Two when the *D* was dropped. The area was named after Holsworthy in Devon, England; this is where in 1807 Governor Lachlan Macquarie married Elizabeth Campbell.
The Holsworthy of today is most well known for the Australian Army Reserves base – Holsworthy Barracks – located there. Training exercises are often carried out here with signs posted around the perimeter warning trespassers of the danger
The area once belonged to the Tharawal people.
Land grants were given out in 1798 for farming, the soil was good and crops of corn, wheat and vegetables were soon growing. In 1835 a settlement named Eckersley was established and by 1880 there were a number of vineyards in the area
