Girraween Historical Note:
Girraween is located 30 kilometres west of the Sydney central business district; it is in the local government area of the Cumberland City Council and is part of the Greater Western Sydney region.
Meaning Place of Flowers – Girraween is an Aboriginal word, the area had originally belonged to the estate of D’Arcy Wenthworth, who was remembered by the naming of the nearby suburb Wentworthville in his honour. Wentworth had been acquitted on three charges of Highway Robbery , he narrowly escaped a forth charge by declaring he was moving to Botany Bay to serve as an assistant surgeon arriving on the second fleet ship Neptune. He served his role and went on to become the Superintendant of convicts on both Norfolk Island and in Parramatta.
Girraween Public School was opened in 1930 and Girraween High School was opened in 1976. The suburb is surrounded by Prospect, Blacktown, Seven Hills, Toongabbie, Greystanes, Pendle Hill and Pemulwuy.
