Erskineville Historical Note:
Erskineville is located 3kilometres south of the Sydney central business district; it is in the local government area of the City of Sydney and is part of both the Inner West and Inner City regions.
In 1872 the suburb was originally called Macdonaldtown named after an earlier subdivision in 1846 that was south of Erskineville owned by Stephen Macdonald. The streets surrounding the early Macdonaldtown subdivision are named after relatives of the Macdonald family – Amy, Eve, Rochford, Coulson and Flora. Knight Street was named after Henry Knight one of the earliest brick makers in the area.
Erskineville was named after Erskine Villa the home of Reverend George Erskine that was built in 1830. Original inhabitants of the area in the late 19th century were predominantly market gardeners, though tanning and brick making became dominant industries, and in the early 20th century it became a working class suburb.
