Darlington Historical Note:
Darlington is located 3 kilometres south of the Sydney central business district and, is part of the Inner West region under the local government area of the City of Sydney.
This mall inner city suburb was part of an area first occupied by the Cadigal band of the Dharug people. Sadly the Cadigal people were killed in the smallpox epidemic of 1789, with perhaps 3 left by 1791. It was thought some of the Cadigal people may have fled to the concord area.
In 1827 botanist William Shepherd was offered 200 acres but refused the grant wishing to live closer to town. In 1835 he held 28 acres of land in the north east, where he cultivated a nursery garden. He named it Darling Nursery in honour of Governor Ralph Darling. The suburb became Darlingtown which corrupted into Darlington – street names of Myrtle, Pine Rose and Vine are named in honour of the nursery.
