Blakehurst Historical Note:
Located 18 kilometers south of the Sydney central business district is the suburb of Blakehurst. This southern Sydney suburb is part of the St George area under the local government of the Municipality of Kogarah.
Blakehurst was named after road assessor and post master for the Cooks River – William Blake in 1863. Blake ran a small farm in this area that had originally been part of a land grant given to Robert Townson in 1808.
In 1864 A punt was established at Tom Ugly’s Point or Point Punt. What is now known as Tom Ugly’s bridge was originally known as the Georges River bridge when it was opened in 1929. In 1987 a second crossing was opened
Blakehurst is connected to Sylvania – to the south in the Sutherland Shire by Tom Uglys Bridge over the Georges River. Tom Uglys is the southernmost point.
