Birchgrove Historical Note:
This inner western suburb is located 5 kilometers west of the Sydney central business district and is under the local government area of the Municipality of Leichardt
Located on the North West slope of the Balmain peninsula, overlooking Sydney Harbour, including Yurulbin and Ballast Points. The only adjacent suburb is Balmain. It is one of Sydney’s wealthier suburbs thanks to its harbour fringes; the long waterfront provides views of the Parramatta River, with Cockatoo Island dominating the foreground.
Named after Birchgrove House built in 1812 by Lieutenant John Birch, who was the paymaster for the 73rd regiment. He added *grove* to his surname when naming the house due to the large number of orange tress already growing on the site. His home was built out of stone that is believed to have quarried on site.
From the 1860’s a large number of water front businesses began appearing in the area including Coopers boat builders and the Morrison and Sinclair shipyard.
