Fawkner historical note
Fawkner is a suburb of Melbourne located 12 km north from the central district of the city. The area it’s under the local government of the Cities of Moreland and Hume. According to the 2016 census the suburb had a population of 14,043 inhabitants.
Box forest covered the land at the beginning. You can note that the forest name reefer to one of the first Melbourne settlers John Pascoe Fawkner. In 1867 John Juke, who settled the area of this suburb, decided to name it after John Fawkner. His grandson, David Jukes live on his lands until 1970. The first post office opened in 1885 but closed in 1888. It re-opened later in 1904 following by new community facilities.
The first school in Fawkner opened in 1909 but purchased in 1997 by the Quang Duc Buddhist Welfare Association to build the buddhist Quang Duc Temple. Residential development began in 1906 with the south and was encouraged by the installation of electricity in 1920. Until 1940, Coyne family owned Fawkner north and used it to farming. The north part started its development during the post WWII period. Housing Commission purchased lands in the north in order to build residential blocks and houses.
