Thomastown historical note

Thomastown is a suburb of Melbourne located 17 km north from the central district of the city. The area it’s under the local government of City of Whittlesea. According to the 2016 census the suburb had a population of 20,523 inhabitants.

First settlers arrived in the late 1840s. John Honniball Thomas and Mary bought more than one hundred acres of lands in the area. The first post office opened in 1862 and settlers used the lands for farming and carttles. It was also attractove for horse racing until the WWI. The Metropolitan Dairies opened an housing cooperative in 1947.
