Parkville historical note

Parkville is an inner suburb of Melbourne located 3 km north from the central district of the city. The area it’s under the local government of the Cities of Melbourne and Moreland. According to the 2016 census the suburb had a population of 7,409 inhabitants.

The origin of the suburb’s name remains uncertain. It may have come from the Royal Park. But Parkville was also the name of the Ryan family property’s in the 1870s. Estate started sales lands of Parkville South in 1861. United States military troupes used the Royal Park for camps during the first world war. Melbourne Hospital moved to Parkville during the post war period. Finally, the Royal Park Psychiatric Hospital lands was used to build the Athlete’s Village for the 2006 Commonwealth Games.
