Footscray historical note

Footscray is an inner suburb of Melbourne located 6 km west from the central district of the city. The area it’s under the local government of the City of Maribyrnong. According to the 2016 census the suburb had a population of 16,345 inhabitants.

The Wurundjeri, the Yalukit-willa and, the Marin-balluk tribes used the lands as a meeting place. Fish and water were provided by lakes in the area. It was a natural reserve full of swamps located along the rivers. Charles Grim was one of the first settler in 1803, and one park named one park after him. The first post opened in1857. Municipality built a bridge across Saltwater rivers in 1859.

The residential expansion started between 1881 and 1890. Populations triples during this period and settled an industrial zone in the suburb. Factories start to declined in 1960 after the WWII. Many factories and building of the industrial area turned into residential places later. Despite that, headquarters of the Lonely Planet Publications still located in the west of Footscray.

Nowadays more 130 restaurants of each countries (Chinese, Indian, African …) are active in the suburb. Art Deco building was built in 1930 and remains todays. Furthermore, the Footscray park is the largest intact Edwardian park in Australia. On another hand, lot of film and shows used the suburb for some scenes. It’s the case of the movie “Romper Stomper” in 1992. In 2013 Footscray ran an Art competition in the town for public installation. The suburb is also a town to the contemporary art centre “Footscray Community Arts Centre (FCAC)”. The area is also known to be an important music hub. Finally, Footscray held regularly different festivals.
