Coburg is a suburb of Melbourne located 9 km north from the central district of the city. The area it’s under the local government of the City of Moreland. According to the 2016 census the suburb had a population of 26,185 inhabitants.

The Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation occupied the territory before the European settlement. They used lands as a worship place. Later, a surveyor named Henry foot decided to rename the place “Pentridge”, in 1840.  The Coburg population grew fast during the Victorian gold rush period. The area became a good place for bluestone quarries settled in 1860. A prison called “HM Prison Pentridge” was built and use to punish prisoners with hard labour.

Because of this prison the suburb had a bad reputation back in this period. That’s why Robert Mailer of Glencairn proposed to rename the suburb in “Coburg” in 1870. The first Coburg post office opened in 1853.

The area is fill with parks and reserves. Lake Reserve is a good picnic spot for nature lovers. If you like quiet walks you can also go across the Merri Creek Trail. There is lot of educational facilities: four primary school and two Catholics one’s. Coburg is also a home to the Australian International Academy, an Islamic school and a secondary school campus.

The Melbourne 2030 Metropolitan designed Coburg as one of the 26 principal activity centres. The suburb is a house to a large variety of festivals, restaurant, cafes pubs and hostel. The Victorian Heritage Register contains lot of location and places of Coburg. The old door of the HM Prison remains to be a famous construction in the area.
