Camberwell historical note

Camberwell is a  suburb of Melbourne located 9 km east from the central district of the city. The area it’s under the local government of the City of Boroondara. According to the 2016 census the suburb had a population of 22,081 inhabitants. The Melbourne 2030 Metropolitan Strategy designated Camberwell a one of the 26 Principal Activity Centre near to Melbourne.

One of the first settlers in the city named the suburb like this because the area reminded him the way three roads intersected in the south London district of Camberwell. The first post office opened in 1864. Thanks to the Melbourne’s suburban rail network the area expanded in the 1880s.

The oldest part of the city is located near to the Prospect Hill Road and the area is fill with Victorian style houses. Nowadays, Camberwell is an affluent suburb for Melbourne. There are almost no industrial zones.

Back in 1980s the population showed a strong opposition to a major development plan, they were against the construction of a huge shopping complex to the east of Burk Road. Later, in 1999 some similar opposition against the Camberwell railway happened but the project was finally approved in 2009.
