Berwick historical note

Berwick is a suburb of Melbourne located 41 km south-east from the CBD of the city. The area it’s under the local government of the City of Casey. According to the 2016 census the suburb had a population of 47,674. In order to commemorate the WWI the town planted an alley of trees on the Avenue of Honour.

Originally part of the Cardinia Creek run, the subdivision of Berwick started in 1854 and a post office, a store and numerous of other business opened in the area. Later farm activities became central in the economy of the suburb. The Berwick Agricultural Society established in 1848 is one of the oldest famer’s society in Victoria estate. A quarry opened in 1859 in order to support the construction of the railway line, nowadays you can find the Wilson Botanic Park instead.

From 1990s to 2000 the area became a good destination for first house buyer and started to develop. For example, the Berwick Inn building remain and used to be an important local centre in the early days. There are few primary schools in the area, but you can also find adult education facilities such as Chisholm Institute of TAFE and a sizable campus of Federation University Australia.

The Australian rules football team of the suburb compete in the Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League. The “Wickers” is a successful cricket club in Berwick.
