Belgrave historical note

Belgrave is a small suburb of Melbourne located 36 km south-east from the central district of the city. The area it’s under the local government of Shire Yarra Ranges. According to the 2016 census the suburb had a population of 3,929 inhabitants. All the area was severely damaged during the Ash Wednesday fires in 1983.

The suburb is located near to the Dandenong Ranges and was first occupied by the Wurundjeri first nations people. In 1851 European people settled the area and developed it. Mr and Lrs R.G Benson named the suburb after a chapel in Yorkshire in England.  The first post office opened in 1904.

In 1933 McDonald’s wanted to establish a restaurant in the suburb but the proposition was contested by the population. Finally, they agreed on the restaurant but not on the drive service and the firm decided to renounce to the project.

Lot of shops are located on the main street in Belgrave. The location possesses galleries and bookshops and numbers of cafes which serve fair-trade coffees. Tourism activities are common in Belgrave specially for the 1000 steps track or the Sherbrooke Falls.
