Balwyn historical note

Balwyn is a suburb of Melbourne located 10 km east from the central district of the city. The area its under the local government of the City of Boroondara. According to the 2016 census the suburb had a population of 13,312 inhabitants.

In 1840 a special survey plan of Port Phillip allowed gentlemen to buy lands for 1$ per acres. Balwyn was part of Elgar’s Special Survey and subdivide into numerous of small farms. Andrew Murray, a commercial editor, moved in the suburb in 1850 and named his property in reference to the Gaelic word “bal” and the Saxon word “wyn” which literally mean “The home of the vine”. Later the area was name after him. His house is now part of the Fintona Girl’s school.

The first post office opened in 1874 and closed in 1894. Finally, to be reopened in 1920. In 1990 the single screen cinema converted in a 5-screen complex, but its foyer was recovered in 2010. Lot of church construction happened during the post WWII boom of residential development in Melbourne. Nowadays Balwyn still be an influent suburb of Melbourne, occupied by middle and upper classes.

Balwyn is in the top 5 of the most exclusive suburbs of Melbourne. Significant interwar mansions are located between Mont Albert Road and Whitehorse Road. You can visit the Maranoa Gardens here; this garden is the first to be entirely dedicated to aboriginal flora.

In term of sport there is one Australian Rules football team club located in Balwyn and competing in the Eastern Football League. The suburb also has a cricket team.
