Avondale Heights historical note

Avondale Heights is located 11 km North-West from Melbourne’s central district. This suburb is part of the local government of the City of Mooney Valley. According to the census of 2016 Aspendale had a population of 11,633. Maribyrnong River bound Avondale Heights to the east.

Originally known as Maribyrnong West the suburb changed later to became Avondale before the council drew attention of the local government on the existence of Avondale in Queensland. In 1920 the Griffin couple designed plans to develop the area. They created internal reserves, children playgrounds, socials centres and pedestrian walk.

Before European arrival, the Avondale Heights lands was occupied by Australian aboriginal people. Scientists found evidences of human occupation for at least 18,000 years. In 1835, Edmund Davis Ferguson and Michael Solomon established a pastoral holding in the Avondale area. During the WWI a password was needed to cross the Canning Street bridge linked to the Department of Defence Explosives Factory. After the war, dairy and cattle farms installed themselves on Avondale Heights land. In 1960 this area became a good spot for the market gardens.

Similar to many suburb, Avondale Heights possess it own Australian Rules Football team. But there are also clubs for the following sports; soccer, cricket and basketball.
