Heidelberg historical note
Heidelberg is a suburb of Melbourne located 11 km north-east from the central district of the city. The area it’s under the local government of the city of Banyule. According to the 2016 census the suburb had a population of 6,225 inhabitants.
Melbourne absorbed the suburb as an expansion by after the WWII. This suburb is certainly of the first rural allotments in Melbourne which was founded just only 3 years before. After the WWI, The City Council proposed to change the suburb name’s in order to avoid it to sounds like a German name. Despite public opinion and debates, the name remained unchanged. The first post office opened in 1853 under the name of “Warringal” but renamed “Heidelberg” in 1865.
During the decade of 1880, Heidelberg rural lands inspired many artists. In the same period many houses were vacant because of the absence of transport facilities in the area. The real development of the suburb started in 1970s. Nowadays many facilities are located in the area including schools, transports, shops and sports clubs. The town is a host to the Austin Hospital which is one of the biggest hospitals in Victoria. The Shopping Centre “Burgundy Street” built in 1980 was recently renewed.
