Yowie Bay Historical Note:
Yowie Bay is located 24 kilometres south of the Sydney central business district; it is in the local government area of the Sutherland Shire.
Yowie Bay has been named after the small bay on the north shore of the Port Hacking Estuary – also known as the Port Hacking River. It shares its 2228 postcode with the suburb of Miranda.
Yowie is an Aboriginal word that means *Place of echoes*
In 1889 land was released in what was originally called the Village of Weerona. The name Ewie Bay was also recognised by both the post office and electoral office in the early days. In 1827 Surveyor Dixon named the area Yowie Bay, and in 1973 the suburb was officially assigned the name by the Geographical Names board.
Yowie Bay is predominantly a residential area; there is a marina at the end of Wonga Road with a liquor store nearby. The Post Hacking Open Sailing Club is also located in Yowie Bay
