Woolwich Historical Note:

Woolwich is located 11 kilometres north west of the Sydney central business district; it is in the local area government of the Municipality of Hunters Hill. Woolwich is on the lower north shore area of Sydney.

The suburb has been named after Woolwich, by the banks of the Thames River in London. The Parramatta River had been called the *Thames of the Antipodes* by the early settlers and many of the suburbs along the river have been named after localities along the Thames River in England – Putney, Henley and Greenwich.

The Aboriginal name for the area is Mookaboola or Moocooboola which means *meeting of waters*.

Samuel Onion was an early settler who owned an ironmongery business – he gave the suburb its first name in 1835 – *Onion Point*. John Clark another early land holder is responsible for the name *Clarke’s Point*.

Woolwich sits on a peninsula between the Parramatta and Lane Cove Rivers, jutting out from Hunters Hill.
