A geeky historical note on this suburb +

Woolloomooloo is located 1.5 kilometres east of the Sydney central business district; it is in the local government area of the City of Sydney and is an inner city Eastern Suburb of Sydney.

The suburb is in a low-lying former docklands area at the head of Woolloomooloo Bay. Historically the suburb has been a working class district, but this has changed recently with the redevelopment of the water front, especially the housing development on Finger Wharf.

Initially called Garden Cove or Garden Island The first land grant in 1793 was to John Palmer to allow him to run cattle for the fledgling colony. In the 1840’s the area was divided up into what is now Woolloomooloo, Darlinghurst and parts of Surry Hills.

Finger Wharf is known for its remarkable size it is 400 meters long and 63 meters wide and at one stage was the largest wooden structure in the world.

Neighbouring suburbs include Elizabeth Bay, Darlinghurst, and Potts Point.
