Whalan Historical Note:
Whalan is located 44 kilometres west of the Sydney central business district; it is in the local government area of the City of Blacktown and is part of the Greater Western Sydney region.
Whalan has been named after James Whalan, who, in 1831 was granted 300 acres of land at Mount Druitt. His father was Sergeant Charles Whalan who was in charge of the Light Horse Guard and Governor Lachlan Macquarie’s orderly sergeant. John Whalan explored the areas around the Blue Mountains and Jenolan Caves and discovered the rock formation known as the Grand Arch.
There is an extensive reserve in Whalan that is made up of four football fields and four soccer fields, there are also numerous parks and reserves dotted around the suburb, and a large go-kart track.
There are three public schools, Madnang Public, Whalan Public and the special needs school Halinda.
Surrounding suburbs include Tregear, St Marys, Oxley Park, Lethbridge Park, Mount Druitt, Emerton and Dharruk.
