Waitara Historical Note:
Waitara is located 23 kilometres north west of the Sydney central business district; it is part of the local government area of Hornsby Shire and is in the North Shore area of Sydney.
Waitara is a Maori word that means* hail, pure water* or *hail, wides steps*. Waitara is also a township in New Zealand.
Miles McCrae once owned land in Southern Sydney near Hurstville. He later sold this land to a development company and the manager used the name Waitara for the subdivision project. McCrae went on to buy land near Hornsby and when in 1895 the railways station opened, he suggested the name Waitara which was formerly adopted.
Waitara today is a centre for all things automotive, with many smash repairers, car maintenance, and car dealerships – both new and used dominating the area. There is just one hotel in the suburb the Blue Gum Hotel, which, was one of the first buildings in the area.
