Ryde Historical Note:
Ryde is located 13 kilometres north west of the Sydney central business district; it is in the local government area of and administrative centre for the City of Ryde. Ryde is part of the Northern Beaches area of Sydney and is on the north bank of the Parramatta River.
Ryde has been named after the town of Ryde on the Isle of Wight. It may have been adopted from G.M. Pope who had been a resident of the Isle of Wight’s *Ryde* – when he settled in the area he opened a store called the *Ryde Store*.
Ryde is the third oldest settlement in Australia after Sydney and Parramatta. The name Ryde was used from the 1840’s and was adopted as the name of the municipality in 1870. The suburb contains the oldest settler’s cottage in Australia – Addington – on Victoria Road.
