Russell Lea Historical Note:
Russell Lea is located 8 kilometres west of the Sydney central business district; it is in the local government area of the city of Canada Bay.
Russell Lea is on the western shore of Iron Cove, along the Parramatta River. It is a quiet suburb with large waterfront homes and tree lined streets.
Russell Lea has been named after Russell Baron who was one of the areas original settlers. He was a politician, mine owner and pastoralist. On a 60 acre land grant he developed the *Russell Lea Estate*. Russell had been born in Penge near London in 1830. In 1855 he married and within 2 years had acquired 2 stations on the Barwon River. He could turn his hand to any task – Farming, horse breaking, stock handling, shepherding and he proved himself as a, carpenter, stone mason, blacksmith, contractor, and builder. From 1880-1886 he erected his mansion Russell Lea, whose estate encompassed the suburb that bears its name.
