Richmond Historical Note:
Richmond is located 63 kilometres north west of the Sydney central business district; it is in the local government area of the City of Hawkesbury. This township is at the foot of the Blue Mountains
The area was the home of the Darug Aboriginal people. In 1789 the area was explored by colonists and named *Richmond Hills*. This name was given by Governor Phillip in honour of Charles Lennox the third Duke of Richmond. This was the third area to have settlement in Australia, after Sydney and Parramatta; in 1794 the first 22 settlers arrived in the area. They came to the area to farm 30 acres in what is now the Pitt Town Bottoms. There was a desperate need for food in the colony and by 1799 the region was producing half the grain that was being produced within the colony.
In 1795 the *Battle of Richmond Hill* took place between the Darug people and the settlers.
