North Rocks Historical Note:

North Rocks is located 26 kilometres north west of the Sydney central business district; it is in the local government area of the Hills Shire and is in the Hills District area

The *North Rocks* name goes back to the beginning of settlement in Parramatta and the name is actually older than the suburb itself, which was at first called Rosehill.  It was in 1789 that Governor Phillip reserved large areas of land to the west and north of Rosehill for the use of Government stock.

North Rocks was a massive sandstone outcrop which ended on the ridge on the south side of Hunts creek. The rocks dominated the landscape and while they were not preserved the new name they gave to the area was.

When it was decided to build a gaol at Parramatta a contractor bought *The Rocks*, so in 1844 most of The North Rocks became gaol walls.
