Miranda Historical Note:
Miranda is located 24 kilometres south of the Sydney central business district and is part of the Sutherland Shire.
The land that stretched from Cronulla to Sutherland was owned by Thomas Holt, it was the manager of the Holt estate – James Murphy who named the area Miranda after a character in *The Tempest* a play written by William Shakespeare. Holt had planned a sheep and cattle farm on his land, the plan failed and the fertile grounds were leased to market gardeners instead.
By the 1920’s steam trains operated between Sutherland and Cronulla via Miranda. There were just 5 shops in Miranda in 1923. Settlements of soldiers returning from WW1 were established in this area and it was considered to be one of the best poultry farming and fruit growing areas in Sydney.
Today it is a mix of low, medium and high density housing and a commercial centre for the southern suburbs.
