Lurnea Historical Note:

Lurnea is located 35 kilometres south west of the Sydney central business district; it is in the local government area of the City of Liverpool.

Lurnea was the original home of the Cabrogal people who spoke the language of the Darug people. In the 1800’s the area was given the name Hillview, which continued until after WW1 when it was converted into a soldier settlement, providing returned soldiers with enough room for a farm and small house. It was renamed Lurnea which means *resting place*.

Redeveloped again in the 1970’s to a more residential suburb, this time it became home to many returned veterans from the Vietnam War.

There are two schools in Lurnea – Lurnea Public Primary School that was opened in 1960 and the Lurnea High School that opened in 1965, there is an English Centre and a Hearing Impaired Unit both of which have also been established at the school which caters for year 7 to 12 students
