Lower Portland HIstorical Note:
Lower Portland is located 80 kilometres north west of the Sydney central business district; it is in the local government areas of both the Hills Shire and the City of Hawkesbury.
The area was once home to the Darug People; they were the owners of what is now the Greater Sydney region.
Lower Portland was named after the Prime Minister of Great Britain in 1783 (and again in 1807-1809) William Henry Cavendish Bentinck, 3rd Duke of Portland. The name for the area was first used in 1810 and is associated with a story about a rock on the plateau above the headland resembling that of the Duke of Portland.
The area is popular for water skiing and for its scenic views.
The Lower Portland Ferry is one of four vehicular ferries that operate across the Hawkesbury River.
Townships that surround Lower Portland include Cumberland Reach, Webbs Creek, Leets Vale, Maroota, Sackville North and South Maroota.
