Leichardt Historical Note:
Leichhardt is located five kilometres west of the Sydney central business district and is part of the Inner West Council. It is an inner west suburb of Sydney with neighbouring suburbs of Haberfield, Annandale, Stanmore, Petersham, Lewisham and Lilyfield.
The area was the original home of the Wangal band of the Dharug people
Named after the Prussian explorer Ludwig Leichardt. In the 1840’s he led an expedition 4,800kms in search of an overland route from Southern Queensland to Port Essington. In 1848 he disappeared in his attempt to cross the continent from the Darling Downs to the Swan River Colony in Western Australia.
In 1871 Leichardt was proclaimed a municipality and in 1949 it merged with the municipalities of Annandale and Balmain, and in 1967 the boundaries were altered again to include Glebe and parts of Camperdown. In 2003 they were changed yet again to exclude Glebe and Forest Lodge.
