Hurlstone Park Historical Note:
Hurlstone Park is an inner western suburb of Sydney, located 10 kilometres south west of the central business district. It lies within the local government areas of both the City of Canterbury and the Municipality of Ashfield.
Hurlstone Park was previously known as Wattle Hill and Fernhill. Following the post master general’s refusal to open a post office called Fernhill, a referendum was called in 1910 and the name Hurlstone was chosen after Hurlstone College nearby. John Kinloch had founded the school naming it after his mother’s maiden name which was Helen Hurlstone.
The college later moved to a new site and is now known as Hurlstone Agricultural High School. The *Park* was added after a request by the railway department wishing to avoid confusion with the town of Hillstone in New South Wales.
Hurlstone Parks neighbours include Ashfield, Canterbury, Summer Hill, Earlwood, Dulwich Hill, Marrickville and Marrickville South
