Duffy’s Forest Historical Note:
Duffy’s Forest is located 28 kilometres north of the Sydney central business district, this northern suburb falls under the local government area of Warringah Council and is considered to be part of both the Northern Beaches region and the Forest District.
Named after Patrick Duffy who in 1857 received a land grant in the area. He became a timber cutter who cleared a road through the bush to Cowan Creek where he built a stone wharf that was used for transporting timber. The road down is called Duffy’s Track and the wharf is still known as Duffy’s Wharf.
A popular tourist attraction within Duffy’s Forest is the Waratah Park Earth Sanctuary. The park itself is famous for being the setting for the popular children’s television series *Skippy the bush kangaroo* – much of the set and props are still there along with descendants of the original kangaroos used in the show.
