Chester Hill Historical Note:
Chester Hill is a suburb of the local government of Bankstown plotting 25 kilometres west of the CBD, in the state of NSW. Chester Hill shares the postcode of 2162 with the adjacent suburb of Sefton.
It is thought by many that the name came from the local aboriginal inhabitants, who thought they had found a mountain, instead the tribal elder proclaimed it was “just a hill” thus the name “Chester Hill”. The land is originally part of John Thomas Campbell’s estate, known as Campbell Hill, it covered 4.0 km2. The Land was used for farming until the opening of the railway line in 1924 when the area developed into a residential and light industrial zone.
There is a newly developed shopping centre named Chester square located behind the main road of Waldron Road serving the areas of Chester Hill, Sefton, Birrong and Bass Hill. Amenities in the suburb include the Chester Hill branch of the Bankstown City Libraries, Chester Hill Fire Station and a community centre.
There are three schools in Chester Hill being Chester Hill Public School, Chester Hill North Public School and Southern Cross College.
Parks in Chester Hill include the Terry Lamb Complex, which includes Frank Bamfield Oval, and Abbott Park. Chester Hill also has an RSL club, bowling club and a community garden.
