Campsie Historical Note:
Campsie is a south-western suburb of Sydney. Campsie is located 13 kilometres south-west of the Sydney central business district, on the southern bank of the Cooks River. Campsie is the commercial and administrative centre of the City of Canterbury.
The name Campsie was taken from the Campsie parish in Stirlingshire, Scotland.
In the early days of European settlement, the land of Campsie was primarily used for farming. The south parts of Campsie was part of an estate occupied most of the present day Kingsgrove.
The Town Hall of the Municipality of Canterbury was relocated to Campsie in 1962 and the City of Canterbury was declared in 1993. Campsie houses a large population of Chinese and Korean origins. However, the suburb also has substantial numbers of Indians, Africans, Middle Easterners, Pacific Islanders and Europeans that are happy to live here.
Campsie is a mixture of suburban residential, retail and light industrial developments, all in one. The main shopping centre is located along the main street of Campsie – Beamish Street. The centre is conveniently located close to Campsie railway station. The shopping centre boasts supermarkets, a discount department store and a variety of specialty shops and cafes.
