Bilgola is part of the northern beaches region and is 33 kilometers north east of the Sydney central business district. Sitting in northern Sydney it comes under the control of the local government area of Pittwater Council. In the western part of the suburb is the Bilgola Plateau.

Bilgola is situated on the Pacific Ocean side of the Barrenjoey Peninsula between Newport to the south and Avalon to the north. The land rises steeply behind Bilgola Beach to the Plateau and then descends to Clarevill on the western side of the peninsula

The suburb gets its name from the Aboriginal term Belgoula – meaning *swimming waters* or * a pretty beach with steep slopes, studded with cabbage palms* In 1822 Robert Henderson received a grant of 100 acres which he named Belgoola, but the district eventually adopted Bilgola. The area was owned by the McLurcan family from the start of the early 1900s.
